Introduction

The research indicates many from the resources sector saw a strong correlation between the lack of workplace coaching and the lack of appropriate Supervisor skills. The reasons why were numerous:

  • Time restrictions
  • Pressure of production
  • Supervisors lack of understanding:
    • that coaching is within their role
    • how to implement it
    • how to do it

Below is guide highlighting the difference between coaching and mentoring.

Coaching Mentoring
Improving skills and performance Guiding and encouraging through issues
Instructive Personal and supportive
Working towards a pre-defined goal Confidante - discuss issues and problems
Usually the Supervisor's Manager Not the Supervisor's Manager, usually another competent Supervisor

There are two segments to Part C. As well as information on coaching there are tools managers and those being trained can use as prompts to assist them in their roles as managers of Supervisors and new Supervisors.
