Document 8: Planning Tool 1
Documents 8 and 9 are designed as tools to be used when starting a coaching program.
The Guide to Starting Off Meeting 1 outlines specific areas to cover in the initial meeting
between a coach and trainee to ensure each party will be able to work successfully together and get the most out of the program.
The Guide to Subsequent Meetings is important to keep the program on track and to revisit areas,
provide opportunity for self reflection and achieve the desired outcome.
How to plan for the first and subsequent meetings
Guide to starting off Meeting 1
- Determine up front what each party is expecting and what they want to get out of the coaching process
- Determine the best mode of delivery for each party e.g. where meetings take place
- Reflect upon skill sets and determine what level they are at
- Challenge the reasoning behind this e.g. ask for an example of when a situation has arisen and how they dealt with it
- Step outside the comfort zone
- Identify gap areas
- Formalise a plan of how these gaps can be addressed in the workplace
Guide to Subsequent Meetings
- Discuss outcomes and challenges of the identified plan
- Encourage any other issues that may have been experienced
- Self reflection of their performance
- Share knowledge and examples of successes and failures
- Revisit skill sets
- Determine work to be done in the workplace or continued focus of efforts in the workplace
- Using crew member/colleagues to give feedback on changed behaviour
- Seek other expertise if required (in consultation with both parties)
- Find other resources to assist e.g. literature, internet, training courses
