Document 6: Coach Types and Attributes of a Coach and Trainee
This document is intended to provide a guide to developing a successful coaching program.
Highlighting the attributes of a Coach and Trainee will enable an organisation to align these
qualities to individuals within their organisation.
The document also provides information for both parties to be aware of participating in a coaching program.
The different types of coaching are indented to provide some insight into how a range of people within or
external to the organisation can be utilised in a coaching capacity.
Coaching is a Process:

Where an employee receives support and guidance from an experienced colleague

Of sharing professional and personal skills and experiences that enable the trainees to grow and
develop

Based upon encouragement / constructive comments / openness / mutual trust / respect / willingness
to learn and share

To help the trainee to change something - improve performance / develop their leadership skills /
develop their partnership skills / realise their vision

Coach Types:
Technical Coach
Provides an educative process, to assist the trainee to become technically
proficient to the standard required by the employer
Specific Role
Posesses job specific technical knowledge, skills and experience and has the
capacity and willingness to share this knowledge:

- Organisational culture

Coach Types:
Interdependent Coach
Interdependent people combine their own efforts with the efforts of
others to achieve their greatest success
Interdependent people may be good individual producers, but they won't
necessarily be good leaders or team players
Provides a process to assist the trainee development of people and team
management skills and communication capabilities
Specific Role
Encourages the trainee to use self reflection dusring interactions with team members and individuals
